2013 University Retreat

leadership-word-cloudUMBC’s strategic plan, Our UMBC: A Strategic Plan for Advancing Excellence, successfully launched during the fall University Retreat, where President Hrabowski and special guests Chancellor William E. ‘Brit’ Kirwan and University of Maryland, Baltimore President Jay Perman acknowledged the importance of thinking strategically as the university positions itself to achieve the next level of excellence, especially as the institution approaches its 50th anniversary.

Provost Philip Rous opened the two-day discussions and workshops highlighting the value of “planning to plan” throughout the year and how integral it has been in informing the direction for the planning process. Dr. Rous also expressed desire for an engaged and inclusive planning process. “In keeping with our Guiding Principles, the design of the planning process places the campus community at the center of strategy conversations,” he said. “Faculty, staff, students and alumni will be encouraged to participate as members of strategy groups and advisory groups.”

Throughout the Retreat, faculty, staff and student attendees participated in exercises to enhance the information collected in the campus-wide survey and provide additional perspectives through polls and discussion questions in group and individual settings.
